Birth:
Raju Sundaram was born to a Kannadiga Family in Alwarpet. He is older brother to Prabhu Deva and Nagendra Prasad. His father was a popular dance master for Tamil films. His birth name was Rajendra Sundaram and he is the only one of his brothers who has used his birth name (Prabhu Sundaram became Prabhu Deva and Nagendra Sundaram became Nagendra Prasad).

He learnt Western Dancing in his early teens and also Bharathnatyam. He was also a keen student of the Kathak style of dancing.
